Registering with a general practitioner
Under Czech law, every insured resident should have a registered general practitioner. The system does not force you, but not being registered means slower access to specialist referrals and prescriptions.
What you need
- Health insurance card (kartu pojistence) or a confirmation letter from your insurer.
- Passport or residence permit.
- Any vaccination record or medical history from your previous provider (optional but helpful).
Steps
- Pick a GP practice near you. Check they take your insurance fund.
- Call or email to ask if they are accepting new patients (nabor pacientu).
- Book an initial registration visit (vstupni prohlidka), 30 to 45 minutes.
- Fill in a registration form and consent forms.
- Basic check: blood pressure, weight, height, medical history, sometimes ECG or bloods.
First visit realistic expectations
A good first visit takes time. Bring a list of chronic conditions and current medication with brand and generic names. Ask directly whether the doctor is comfortable in English. Ask how they prefer to be contacted (in person, phone, practice portal). Confirm how prescriptions renewals work.
Switching GPs
You can switch once every three months without needing a reason. You do not need the old GP's permission. Just register with the new one and let the old practice know so records can transfer.
